The Advantages of Cane-Fu: Self Defense Training for Seniors
67
Really Smart
Those are the words my son uses to describe this type of self-defense and exercise system for seniors. While also a great type of exercise for older citizens, Cane Fu was designed as a self defense course by Mark Shuey Sr.
Participants use a common companion, the cane, to ensure their safety when the possibility of an attack exists. They are taught exactly how and where to strike back if they come under attack. While the founder hopes that no one ever finds themselves in a situation that would require them to use the skills learned against someone committing a violent crime, just practicing the techniques offers a higher level of confidence.
A Viable Business
Cane Masters also offers a certification course. For a very nominal fee, you too can become a certified Cane-Fu instructor. One of the requirements to become a certified is to spend 20 hours of volunteer time with a physical fitness trainer at a senior citizens living center in order to determine if you enjoy working with that type of clientell.
This step can be done before an investment is ever made. Other steps include video taping the techniques you learn and will eventually teach yourself, and being critiqued during a course. You can get more information about becoming a Cane-Fu Instructor at Canemasters.com.

frugalfamily,
Fascinating! I have taken Judo (in college) and self-defense from our Police department. This is an important item for our tools - which we hope we will never have to use.
Thank you for sharing something I had never heard of before.
FF, this is cool, a senior citizen using a can to trip up the trouble makers. Knowing that you can reasonable assured that you can take care of yourself in most situtation bolsters confidence. I have taken karate in my younger days, but this article reminds me and others of the physical and psychological benefits of participating. Great article, thanks Cred2
Thanks, FF, always got to be on the watch for fowl play, you know!
This is great, Id love to see it in action and one shocked attacker! lol
Do the elderly who master Cane Fu develop better balance and perhaps reduce their reliance on the cane? Interesting article!

What a brilliant idea!! I'd never heard of Cane Fu before now, but if it helps the elderly stay active and goes towards helping them be able to defend themselves if ever the need arise, then it can only be a good thing. Love it thank you.....Also made me smile, I'll never look at an elderly person walking with a cane in the same way again!!
